A Nasty, Bad, Naughty Boy...
Yesterday, I took the high road, and didn't mock Larry Craig.
Mistake.
First, I gotta tell you, if I had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor, and were a U.S. senator, I would not (1) try to deny the charge that I had admitted was true in a court filing; and (2) wouldn't have claimed that in the two months between arrest and plea, I had been hounded into a guilty plea by a newspaper that didn't yet have the story of the arrest. Also, in retrospect, the notion that a US Senator would enter a guilty plea without, y'know, talking to a lawyer (none of those in D.C., eh?) is one I wouldn't try to sell. I wouldn't, but Larry is made of goofier stuff:
I'd feel bad for him, barring his outrageously hypocritical position on gay marriage and similar issues. Also, he frankly seems to have taken an almost sexual--certainly prurient--relish in spanking Bill Clinton while preparing to vote to remove him from office:
Suddenly, my compassion for this self-tortured man has diminished.
